Your coffee, my love
Every morning, I wake my wife, CPA Mom, with a hot cup of coffee. I’ve done this for the last sixteen years. It’s a habit. She expects it. She tells me that not having that when I travel makes her day feel just not right.
“I can’t believe you get that every morning!” a friend of ours uttered recently. She was obviously shocked that my wife would get such attention whereas she didn’t. Her husband looked at me with particular displeasure. “Thanks, kiss ass!” he must have mumbled to himself judging from his dirty look.
I felt a bit embarrased, I admit. My male ego jumped to attention and quickly began analyzing whether such a gesture was, in fact, “kissing ass.” I don’t do that? Do I?
CPA Mom, sensing my internal dialogue, quickly reached over and took my hand. “I’m just lucky that way,” she said smiling and changed the subject. My internal analysis continued, however. I guess my male ego is sensitive to such things.
It was tough getting to sleep that night. It kept gnawing at me. Am I being too much of a kiss ass? Don’t women hate that? Does my CPA Mom take me for granted? But, then, after much soul searching it hit me and I drifted off to sleep feeling content.
You see, I love being there when CPA Mom opens her eyes every morning. I love to see her enjoy the first sips of coffee and the way she smiles and says “morning.”
I bring her this cup not from any sense of duty or feeling of being subservient, but out of love. Love for her and everything we’ve been through together. Two child births, two terrible miscarriages, job changes, joy and sorrow… everything for the last sixteen years.
Every morning I wake my wife with a hot cup of coffee simply because I love her.
Savor the little things with your spouse. Appreciate them for they are what truly counts.
All the best
