Hacked!

I just learned that my site was hacked.  Somehow, someone either got my ftp username and password or did a brute force attack and added spam text to my index.php file.  For some reason, I didn’t have the right permissions set on it.

If you use WordPress, check your file to see if you have a bunch of spam at the end of the file.  It was messing up my feed.

It’s a shame we live in a world where people feel it’s OK to do things like this.  This is a great example, my fellow dads, of why it is so important for us to raise our kids well. They need to have a conscience and understand right from wrong.

All the best (yes, even to you my hacker friend)

Just one of those days…

I’m taking a bit of a respite from posting today. It’s been just one of those days at work.  Crisis management in turbo mode and to top it all off I was told I have to let go of one member of my team.

This person has a family, is expecting to have a peaceful holiday season and doesn’t suspect a thing.  All the business reasons in the world don’t make my feel any better.

So, my fellow dads, now that I’m finally home and it’s Friday evening, I’m going to go spend some time being with my family.  It’s been just one of those days…

Dad’s old spare tire…

There’s no clearer sign of age on good old dad than that spare tire around our midsection.  Our wives are too nice to say too much about it.  Maybe love makes them blind when it comes to our growing tire and they still picture us with our twenty-something physique. I don’t know.  What I do know is that I don’t like it.

I just hit 40 this year and maybe it’s a midlife thing but I’m determined to lose my gut by the time I hit 41.  I’ve bought the books and the diet food.  I’m motivating myself to row every morning.  The only thing I need is real motivation.  I’m debating whether I should take a picture of my belly and post it right up here like the picture above.  That will certainly motivate me to lose it. Look at this article on the subject.  I don’t know.  Maybe I will.

All the best.

Thoughts on Obama’s speech

I’m an America dad.  Born and raised. And, like many of you, I love my country. But, I also love this world we live in. It’s our world. It’s our children’s world.  Therefore, it makes sense that I feel a strong urge to do what I can to help make it better.  Our election has made this urge more pressing. It’s given me hope that we can make the world better.

Honestly, I don’t care if you’re blue or red, Republican or Democrat or, even, Independent.  I respect your right to choose you affiliation and for your voice to be heard. No matter what you think of Obama’s win last night, some parts of his speech resonated with me. And, I think, should resonate all Americans.

“There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can’t solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it’s been done in America for 221 years — block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.”

These words encapsulate what it means to be an American. We are a free people who came together from all parts of the world and forged one of the greatest nations this world has ever seen. And, we did it, block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.  No, we are hardly perfect and we have tons to learn, but we can make things better. We can. It’s our duty and our legacy!

“To those — to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

That’s the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we’ve already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.”

Ideals, my fello dads. These ideals have carried American people through many trials, ups and downs. The Americans that came before us never gave up, they never lost hope. They believed in these ideals and passed the responsibility to live up to those ideals and pass them on to our children.

My fellow dads, we must take up that responsibility honorably and work in our own way to carry it out. We are only caretakers of this nation and world for our children and their children. Lets take care of each other because we’re all in this together.

We can make this a better place for all. Yes we can!

Dad Essentials – Grooming, show them you care

This is the first post in a series I’m writing on what I consider every dad should know (Dad Essentials). The basics.  Lets get a minimum dad standard going.

As my first area of focus, I’m going to tackle proper dad grooming.  I’m educating myself on the area and will bring you along with me sharing my research and experiences.  I’ll review and recommend specific products and tell you what works and what doesn’t.

“No”, I’m not turning into a metrosexual, not that there’s anything wrong with that (e.g., Metro Dad) and I won’t ask you to.  I will ask you to care about your appearance.  I’ll ask you to show your wife, your kids (especially your son(s)) and your friends that you give a *&@$.  If you’re divorced and looking, then you’d better give a hoot about what you look like.

So, with that out of the way, let me give you a preview of my next post.  It’s about what most of us think of when we mention men’s grooming- shaving.  The very thing most of us do every day without giving it a second thought.  The thing that causes razor burn, nicks, ingrown hairs, bumps, 5 o’clock shadow, etc.  Unfortunately, it’s the first thing we do wrong in the morning.  I’m going to tell you what I found out about the lost art of shaving like a man.

Specifically, I’ll give you some information on the history of shaving and dive right into why shaving with the new double or triple blade razors won’t give you the best shave.  I’ll tell you how to save over $100 per year or more simply by switching to traditional “wet shaving.”  I’ll show you what you need and how to do it.  I’ve got the products and will give you my honost opinion on them.

I hope you find it interesting and helpful.  Look for it in the coming day or two.

All the best
