Getting into shape – an update

It’s been about a week on the TNT diet. I’m on the 4 week long, Plan A, where you can’t have any carbs. I’m not doing very well.

At first, I felt great. I felt lighter and with more energy. I was getting better sleep. However, after the week, I’m starting to really feel the lack of carbs. I feel weak. I’m getting headaches. I’m getting nervous.

I’ve decided to throttle back a bit. I’m switching to doing the strict no carb for 5 days with 2 days of eating anything I like. Lets see if that helps.

You are likely not consuming enough calories, and specifically, calories from fat. Boost your fat intake a little for a few days and see if you don’t notice a HUGE difference. One of the tricks I used at first was to take a swig of cream a couple of times a day. Sounds crazy, but it really made the difference. (It doesn’t have to be cream, but that’s just an easy way to know you’re eating more fat.)

    And remember, it’s not a no-carb diet–it’s a LOW-carb diet. There is a difference.

  2. Adam,

    Thanks for your comment!

You’re probably right. I don’t think I was getting enough calories and certainly not from far. I’ll try to do that. Not sure about the cream, though. LOL! What else has a good amount of calories and far??

And, yes, you’re absolutely right. It is a low carb diet. In fact, not necessarily low carb but having carbs at the right time. However, in the first four weeks, they do recommend the no carb (or as close to it) to kick start your body into burning fat instead of storing it.

    Again, thanks.

BTW, did you do this diet or something similar? How’d it go?

    Regards

  3. The other simple problem you may have is dehydration. The diet has a diuretic effect so you need to increase water intake, and a bit more sodium helps, too.

I do this diet every day of my life! (You know I’m the author, right?)

First four weeks are low-carb, but with plenty of vegetables. The people who have the most success also tend to be the ones who eat the most vegetables (based on surveys).

Essentially, you want to give yourself plenty of food options while avoiding high sugar and high starch foods.

As for the cream, that’s just one option–you don’t have to go crazy, but don’t be afraid to have some butter on your vegetables, eat the skin on your chicken (or have thighs instead of breasts), or simply snack on a couple of slices of full-fat cheese.

It may not be a fat/calorie issue at all–as I said, it could be a hydration problem, but I’ve seen this before and upping fat intake just a little more tends to help (we’ve all be taught to avoid it, and when that carries over to this diet, it leaves you with a low-carb AND low-fat diet, which isn’t particularly enjoyable).

  4. LOL! No, I didn’t know you were the author. Thanks for posting your insights! I will focus on hydration and watching the fat calories. Will continue to post my progress.

Thanks for the diet, by the way. There are WAY too many dads battling their bellies. This diet will help.

    All the best
