No wonder they grow up so fast

Those of us that have to work miss a lot. Only a few times a week do we focus on our children and on how fast they’re growing.

I went with my family to the Art’s Festival this past weekend. My seven year old noticed that some of the paintings were really weird or, at least, didn’t resemble anything. Being the fine father that I am I put my hand on his shoulder and lowered myself to his level while we stared at the paintings that looked like paint drops on canvas.

“You know, some paintings are not intended to look like things we see everyday.” I said trying to keep my words at the level that, I thouht, a seven year old would understand.

“Yeah,” he said shaking his head up and down in agreement. “There’s a lot of abstract paintings here.”

My stunned silence gave way to a deeper understanding of how quickly kids grow and how much I’m really missing. My wife walked by me as I straightened up. She must have noticed my internal realization as she whispered with a slight smile, “They’ve been studying abstract paintings in art class.”
