A true dad?

The father of David, the Malawi child recently adopted by Madonna, is asking that end the legal battle over the adoption.  His fear is that Madonna may get mad and send David back to him. Why? As a father, shouldn’t he want to be with his child?  Here’s his reasoning:

“I appeal to them to stop it because I don’t want Madonna to get annoyed to the point of wanting to send back my David,” 32-year-old Banda said.

Banda said that local rights groups were “on my neck every day to support the court action … I am afraid if this is successful Madonna may send David back and I will have nowhere to go to fend for him.”

He continues: “I am confused as to whose interests these human rights organizations are serving,” he said. “Tell Madonna not to be angry with what they are doing.”

“Madonna is helping to take David out of poverty and possible death from diseases, and yet these people want to spoil everything,” he added.

Doesn’t a father want what’s best for his child? If that means being with someone else, isn’t that the right thing to do?

I wonder if Madonna will let little David know who his real father is and the sacrifice he seems to have done.  Of course, being the adopted son of a super-rich, mega-star is not an easy gig for anyone. Lets hope David does grow up to be a productive member of society and doesn’t forget his roots.

Men, here is my nomination for father of the week

Just read the story of Chris Herbst who fought off two home invaders who threatened to rape his daughter and kill his son.  Protecting his pregnant wife and children, he used his bear hands to chase the thugs away.  Unfortunately, in the process he was shot in the face and stabbed several times in the neck and back.

May we all have the guts this fellow dad has if we are ever in a similar situation.

The bank of Mom and Dad is closing?

I ran into a story from the UK entitled the “Bank of Mum and Dad set to close“. Apparently, most parents in the UK believe that their children should begin saving before their tenth birthday.  Is this also true on this side of the pond? Do your children have a bank account?

We started our children’s accounts last year and they have slowly added to it from birthday and Christmas gift money.  It’s really quite fascinating.  My kids ask us constantly to buy them things.  However, when I mention that we should take out their bank money to pay for it they quickly change their minds.  Hmm…

Dire prediction for the world’s coral reefs

This isn’t a dad entry, or maybe it is.  However, it does or should matter to all of us.  CNN is reporting that 60% of the world’s coral reefs may be wiped out within 25 years.  I can’t believe that!  The cause, they think, is global warming.

“You mix some chemicals together and nothing happens. You crank up the Bunsen burner and all of a sudden things start bubbling around. That’s what’s happening. That global Bunsen burner is cranking up.”

This is not a legacy I want to leave my kids or yours.  Think about it. Do something about it.
